SAGINAW — Trailing by 12 late in the game, Saginaw had one last chance to get back into the game, but North Richland Hills Birdville’s Calvin Lakes had other ideas.
Lakes intercepted a pass and returned it 87 yards to seal the Hawks’ 26-7 District 6-4A victory Friday.
Saginaw had marched from its own 20 to the Birdville 18. Two plays prior to that, starting quarterback Brannon Riley was knocked out of the game.
Trailing 13-7 at the half, the Rough Riders (2-3, 1-1) moved to the Birdville 9, where they faced second-and-4.
After an incomplete pass, a 27-yard field goal attempt failed and the Hawks took control.
They drove 80 yards in 12 plays, scoring on a 13-yard pass from Josh Dorman to Jonathan Dents for a 19-7 lead. That score was Dorman’s third scoring pass of the night.
Dorman completed 22 of 32 passes for 292 yards and the three scores.
The Hawks finished with 319 yards of offense. Saginaw finished with 305 yards offense, 203 yards on the ground.
Kerry Gooden finished with 80 yards and one score, and Dwayne Lawrence added 60 yards on 14 carries.
Dorman threw two first-half scoring strikes, the first a 2-yard pass to Clarke Renfro to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive on the first possession.
Three series later, Dorman found Cory Hines from 21 yards for a 13-0 lead.
Saginaw cut the deficit to 13-7 at the half as Gooden scored on a 19-yard dart up the middle to finish a 69-yard drive that took eight plays.
Birdville had a chance for more points, but missed a 27-yard field goal attempt just before the half ended.
